Taxation Law in Australia

Taxation law is the body or system of law that describes government levies on any economic transaction. This law imposes charges on individuals, property, corporations, LLC's or partnerships or any property by a state or a functional equivalent of a state. Through this law, the government is able to raise funds for public purposes such as projects for building or repairing of infrastructures.

The Australian taxation law is mainly imposed by the Australian Federal Government on individuals. Usually, high income earning individuals pay more taxes than those who earn lower. The taxes that are acquired from these individuals are the main source of revenue for the Australian Federal Government. The State Government, on the other hand, does not impose any taxes on the public. It has not done so since World War II. The Federal Government also imposes taxes on corporations and companies, properties and goods and services. Likewise, it imposes excise taxes on some goods that are inelastic such as alcohol, cigarettes and petrol.

Under the Australian taxation law, local governments are being funded through the property taxes that are imposed on residential, industrial and commercial properties. The State governments do not impose any tariffs on properties or in any sale of goods but they do impose stamp duties on several transactions. The State Governments acquire revenue through the Goods and Services Tax that are acquired and distributed by the Federal Government.
